transportation authority. all of us are very familiar with commissioner avalos's work in one of the things that i think he will bring to this body is a commitment to ensuring that there is equity income resources are allocated by this agency, making sure that the needs and interests of every district are met. and to make sure that when it happens it is done in a transparent, open way that is inclusive and allows people to voice their concerns. i had the honor of serving with commissioner avalos for four years. i am proud to have the opportunity to nominate him. he has demonstrated leadership qualities in so many ways. i know the authority will be well served, the entire city and county of san francisco will be well served, especially important as we are going to this transition, as we will find a new, who knows, a permanent executive director that we have that continuity. it is my honor to nominate commissioner john avalos as chair before you. is there a second? seconded by commissioner weiner. any other nominations for chair? seeing none, why don't we open it up to public comment. any membe

fair and process to select our executive director. i believe that commissioner avalos will be able to handily take the wheel and help us usher and addresses key issues that i've outlined today. thank you. >> thank you commissioner, before i turn to commissioner wiener, i want to ask if there is any other member of the public who like to say something else on this item? public comment on this is closed. commissioner wiener. >>i'm happy to support commissioner avalos as chair. sometimes something to get lost in the debates is that even though we have areas of disagreement but often get a lot of attention, a lot of press coverage because anytime you have a big dispute at city hall that is likely to get the attention, in reality when it comes to transportation policy in the city, the vast majority of what we do and what we need is completely not controversial when working together on getting high speed rail, transit, that we get adequate funding from muni, improving pedestrian safety, bicycle roads, we have broad consensus. i know that our chair campos, we are proof in the pudding

supervisor avalos said, talking about in some respects two different cities. and what happens to some people in san francisco. we are a city of great wealth. we have because of a lot of different reasons we are fortunate enough that we have more resources in san francisco then many places throughout the state and throughout this country. but the reason why this vote is so important is that even though we as a board of supervisors do not have actual governance of the schools, what we have done in san francisco over the years because of the work of people like -- and gavin newsom and others is that we have recognize that where our state and federal government have fallen short in fulfilling their duties and obligations to properly funding public schools we a city government have stepped in and fill those gaps. the important point is not for us and giving the school district money that it is already entitled to. i'm glad that we will comply with what the law already requires in the intent of those measures were. the whole point of the supplemental is to recognize that we have a fundamental pr

the following my colleagues the following colleagues who have co sponsored this resolution supervisors avalos, breed, chiu, farrell, kim, mar and wiener. higher education truly is the key to success in this country and the ability of many students to attend an institution of of higher learning is based largely on their ability to secure financial assistance. i know from my own personal experience i'll not be here today sitting in this chair without the ability to have received financial assistance to go to college and to go to law school. unfortunately, the cost of the higher education continues to rise for private, public and for profit community colleges thought this country and students and families in san francisco are right now in the ross pros of making very important decisions about their future. so it is critical that we as a city increase the awareness about financial aid and how the process worgz and specifically the free application for federal student aid, the f a f s a application, which if completed will ensure that student have access to the many reresource available to them

an exemplary job. i will be supporting president chiu today. >> supervisor avalos. >> supervisor avalos: i'm standing in support for the nomination of jane kim. we have not had a woman serve as board president for many years and the time has come. i also feel that it is generally in good faith that we have turnover in the board presidency; we have had many people who can show leadership and can do the work of working with each other, making legislation stronger, better, making sure that we can build coalitions. i have been impressed with jane kim and her work on the board. she came in at a challenging time and showed great independence and puts her mind, body and soul to her work. the way she speaks with her heart and represents people in her district informs colleagues about what she's thinking and where she wants to go i want support in the board president and i want to see if we can actually electric today. >> president: supervisor campos. >> supervisor campos: again i want to take the opportunity to congratulate my colleagues who have been reelected the newly elected. it
